Aegon II Targaryen was always an unworthy king, spending most of his time in the tavern than with his dragon, but Sunfyre is one of the most formidable dragons alive as he is fierce and grows very quickly compared to Arrax and Vermax. Vhagar is the largest tame dragon alive, and also the last creature that took part in Aegon’s conquest of Westeros, making her the largest and strongest dragon in the Dance of the Dragons. House Velaryon is one of the oldest (and wealthiest) houses in Westeros, with a Valyrian bloodline as ancient as House Targaryen — as its current lord, Corlys “the Sea Snake,” loves to remind Viserys. Of all the newly prominent houses in House of the Dragon, Hightower is one of the most important to keep your eye on. The house is headed up by Lord Hobert Hightower, whose younger brother Ser Otto was Hand to King Viserys I Targaryen for much of his reign.
The theory was that the eggs wouldn’t hatch if the children had the blood of Rhaenyra’s alleged lover. Unfortunately for Rhaenyra’s enemies, each of the three children ended up bonded with a dragon. Despite her power and agility, Meleys is no match for Sunfyre and Vhagar, and that marks the end of the Red Queen and the Queen who never was.
Otto also has a son, Ser Gwayne Hightower, who participated in the Heir’s Tournament in the series premiere. House Targaryen are pureblood Valyrians, and Viserys brokers a political alliance with one of the only other Valyrian houses, Velaryon, when he commands Rhaenrya to marry her second cousin Laenor Velaryon. Despite this — and the fact they’re related — Daemon still pursues a marriage with his niece Rhaenyra. Millie Alcock and the rest of the first-generation Targaryens and Hightowers will, as far as HBO has indicated, not be returning this season in flashbacks. That doesn’t mean that we won’t see them again someday, but at least Paddy Considine does not have to jeopardize his own health for another stunning performance that the awards circuit decides to ignore.
Criston’s father is the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven, but despite technically being called a noble house, House Cole is largely looked down upon in noble society for their “low-born” status. Obviously, the show will continue to track the Targaryen lineage about 300 years prior to near-extinction level on Game of Thrones. So, we’ll see the “Dance of the Dragons,” so nicknamed by the civilians of Westeros, take place with mass casualties as a result.
In Fire and Blood, Vermithor is one of the dragons that is eventually claimed by the Dragon Seeds, in this case, a blacksmith’s bastard named Hugh Hammer. Vermithor is eventually forced to fight Seasmoke and Tessarion in the Second Battle of Tumbleton, dying in the tangle of the three dragons that marked one of the saddest events in the war. Much like the first season of House of the Dragon, new episodes of Season 2 are expected to premiere weekly on HBO and simultaneously onto Max - the newly-rebranded Warner Bros. streaming service, formerly HBO Max.
Caraxes is one of the largest and most dangerous of all the remaining Targaryen dragons, thanks in part to the fact that it’s seen war most recently. Caraxes has red scales and was ridden by Daemon Targaryen during the Prince’s many battles around the world, most notably in the Stepstones. House of the Dragon has spent more time politicking than dragon-riding in much of its first season.
Moondancer is one of the quickest of the dragons, despite being one of the smallest and slimmest. Don’t be confused by a non-Targaryen riding a dragon; Laenor is the son of Rhaenys Targaryen, from whom he gets the blood magic necessary to claim a dragon of his very own. Like most dragons, Seasmoke is named after his pale silver-gray scales with a nod to House Velaryon’s powerful fleet of ships.
