You can sign up for excursions from your account on MyVikingJourney.com prior to your trip. Sometimes optional excursions sell out, although there are usually some available once you’re on the ship. Please note that Viking requires at least 48 hours’ cancellation notice if you are on the ship and decide not to go on an optional excursion. Without a doubt, we give Viking chefs top marks for the presentation and flavor of the food they serve. We always enjoyed the variety of food from the local areas we were visiting.

One of Viking's best-kept secrets seems to be robes and slippers, as not many passengers know about them. But ask at reception and they will be waiting in your cabin when you return. You'll have to pay for gratuities, as well as transfers if you did not book your flight through Viking. Bring or exchange small amounts of local currency to tip local guides and bus drivers. Further, a secret mole, who swore me to secrecy, told me that the reason the category (F) rooms exist is that they tend to get a little engine vibration/noise, that the category (E) staterooms don’t tend to get as much.

Suites on Viking cruise ships

Throughout all cabins, bathrooms feature rounded sinks, snug glass shower cubes (larger in the suites) and heated floors. There are a few common points of complaint among passengers revolving around the shower cubical in non-suite cabins. It is narrow and tapered at the end, and there's not much in the way of elbow room.

Every cabin is equipped with a safe and a mini-fridge (with notches in the fridge shelving that make it possible to chill a bottle of wine upright), as well as a handheld hair dryer. In a similar nod to functionality and ease of use, Viking had the remote controls for cabin televisions specially designed so they would only have a few buttons. Did you know that you won’t pay a penny more for your Viking River cruise when you book with us?

The balcony cabins are 205 square feet, while the French balcony cabins are significantly smaller at 135 square feet. Second, the river cruise lines like to offer a consistent experience when you sail, whether you're on the Rhine River in Germany and the Netherlands, or the Danube River in Austria and Hungary. That's because when water levels are either too high or too low for ships to sail on a particular river, Viking (and other lines) can move passengers from one vessel to another easily. Viking offers a variety of itineraries on Europe's rivers -- but what doesn't change much are the cruise ships themselves. Known as "Longships," Viking's fleet of river cruise ships on most rivers all carry 190 passengers, with a similar Scandinavian decor and sensibility, as well as inclusions and programming.

Over two weeks, you'll visit Native American burial grounds and archeological sites in West Virginia and learn about the underground railroad in Ohio. You can taste bourbon and explore the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory or the Kentucky Derby Museum & Horse Park in Louisville. Take time to appreciate American artistry at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky.

So the choice of cabin determines the side of the ship (except for the aquarium class cabins where there is very little view on either side). Running a close second among bathroom complaints on our cruise were the low-flush toilets instituted by Viking, which, passengers said, had a tendency to require several flushes. The toilets are part of Viking's environmentally conscious design, and both complaints, although valid, are minor given the overall comfort and quality of the cabins.

Nothing is too over the top, and casual clothes are the norm during the day, with a minimal dress code required at night. On the newer ship I had to pull out and stand up on the vanity stool to see out the window. Viking also offers smaller versions of its Longships that have fewer balcony cabins, as well as a few different types of river ships with varying numbers of balcony cabins.

The pseudo-balconies do the trick of making the cabins feel larger than they actually are. Each stateroom on Viking Rivers extensive river cruising fleet will serve as a comfortable and serene retreat. As you explore the beautiful landmarks onshore you’ll find your room with its soft bed and beautiful view a perfect place to rest and rejuvenate before heading onshore day after day. Each of the Owner's Suites has a separate bedroom, living room, dining area that seats six people and master bathroom that includes a sauna with a glass wall facing the ocean.

A-Rosa's new E-Motion Sena, sailing on the Rhine, has been designed with families in mind. There's a dedicated family floor, with 12 family cabins sleeping up to six passengers, located next to a kids club. These family cabins feature high-up windows, but at 300 square feet and with funky bunk beds, they're spacious and modern. Having to dock the ship next to another cruise ship also means that the view from your stateroom could be blocked and your cabin could be a bit dark. We were docked next to other ships several times on our 15-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. It’s not a deal breaker for us, but it’s something every river cruise guest should be forewarned about.

Many of the guests are retired, but there were quite a few still working or recently retired. You may be able to upgrade at a later time - but I would suggest deciding how important having the balcony (French or "real") is to you - as the cost difference can be quite significant. There are some who won't travel without a balcony - and others (DH and I included) who always book lowest category....
